Lake Jackson

Lake Jackson is a shallow, naturally fluctuating lake just north of Tallahassee in Leon County, Florida. It is part of the Red Hills landscape and the Lake Jackson Aquatic Preserve. FWC describes the fishing lake as about 4,000 acres; the aquatic preserve’s 5,130-acre figure covers the broader protected area, including other waters. This page is about the Leon County lake, not Lake Jackson in Osceola County or Jackson Lake in Georgia.

Lake levels and sinkholes

Lake Jackson can lose water through natural sinkholes, including Porter Hole Sink, and its usable shoreline and launches change as levels rise and fall. Florida DEP describes a current dry-down event and provides lake-level and landing updates. The situation can change after rainfall, so check the latest agency update on the day you travel. Never walk into a sinkhole or across unstable exposed lake bottom.

Fishing for bass and panfish

FWC’s Leon County forecast identifies Florida largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish and black crappie. It points bass anglers toward hydrilla, eelgrass, maidencane and lily pads, with spring through early summer often favored for bass. Which boat ramps can be used?

At the time of this review, DEP lists Crowder Landing on Lake Jackson and Cedar Hill Landing on neighboring Carr Lake as remaining motorized access points within the preserve; this does not mean a boat can reach Lake Jackson from Carr Lake at low water. DEP warns that boats larger than a small mud boat or airboat may become stuck. DEP lists several other landings for paddlecraft and some for wildlife viewing only. Check DEP’s current access notice before planning any motorized trip, and confirm the exact lake and departure ramp with the captain. FWC’s fishing forecast also discusses low-water launch limitations; agency updates should take precedence over older ramp lists on travel pages.

Rules and a guided trip

Review current Florida freshwater fishing regulations, license requirements and any local access rules before fishing. A listing for a larger charter boat or a fixed trip duration does not establish that such a boat can currently launch here. Ask the operator to confirm real availability, vessel suitability, safe water conditions, departure point and cancellation terms before booking. If conditions do not permit the planned boat, discuss another date or a different Tallahassee-area lake.
